Engaging with the world
QUEBEC, Canada | 94 minutes | 2016
In this documentary, the creation of a soup kitchen by a star chef raises the question of the ethics of our relationship to food. On one end of the spectrum: soup kitchens. On the other: upscale restaurants. Until 2015, when Milan-based chef Massimo Bottura invited 60 colleagues to come together to cook meals for the city’s poor, refugees and homeless, using leftover food from Expo. That idea is the genesis of the Refettorio Ambrosiano, a soup kitchen. Theater of Life chronicles this singular venture, in so doing examining a fundamental issue: the ethics of our relationship to food.
