Gutsy cinema that breaks new ground
RUSSIA | 118 minutes | 2016
The disturbing portrait of a teen whose literal reading of the Bible leads him to religious fanaticism. Veniamin is a teen grappling with a spiritual crisis. He upsets his friends and his whole school with questions that challenge the very foundations of the school’s teaching and practices. Only his biology teacher, Elena, tries to meet him on his own terms – to her peril. Adapted from a play by Marius von Mayenburg on the ambiguities of the Bible, this fascinating, powerful film has a sense of humour in spite of its seriousness. Visually, it employs a bold succession of sequence shots.
