Engaging with the world
BELGIUM, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany | 87 minutes | 2016
A docu-fiction hybrid shot entirely in 16mm that offers a remarkable portrait of Afghanistan. The mythical land of Afghanistan has become the battleground for ferocious skirmishes between coalition forces, tasked with guarding the mountain villages, and the Taliban. During this time, young Gholam, leader of a gang of armed kids, steps up his trafficking activities. Hailed at Sundance, where it won an award for director Pieter-Jan De Pue’s cinematography, and shot entirely in 16mm, this mix of documentary and dramatization puts a fresh, imaginative spin on a complex reality.
