Gutsy cinema that breaks new ground
SWEDEN | 90 minutes | 2016
A young man of small stature who suffers from autism thinks big thanks to his fertile imagination. After the success of his hilarious short Las Palmas, which featured puppets interacting with a baby, Swedish filmmaker Nyholm is back with a new and equally offbeat work. A dramedy with a distinctly surrealist bent, The Giant turns on the trials and tribulations of a young, severely deformed autistic man who finds salvation in the game of pétanque. Drawing comparisons to David Lynch’s famous Elephant Man for its unbeautiful protagonist, this impossible-to-pigeon- hole work dishes up a brand new twist with each new development.
