Engaging with the world
YEMEN | 96 minutes | 2016
Par la véracité de son propos, cette tragédie poignante rappelle que les droits des enfants doivent primer sur certaines pratiques ancestrales qui briment leur liberté. Shot in Yemen, Al-Salami’s first drama is a hard-hitting tale about the stolen childhood of a girl forcibly wed to a man 20 years her senior. Al-Salami’s first foray into fiction is a deeply moving polemic against the forced marriage of prepubescent girls under Yemeni tribal tradition. Adapted from the 2009 novel I Am Nujood, Age 10 And Divorced, the film features a feisty main character of immense spirit and determination. Shot entirely in Yemen, it’s a poignant and chillingly realistic reminder that children’s rights must take precedence over traditional practices that infringe upon their freedom.
