The great names in cinema
SOUTH KOREA | 144 minutes | 2016
An ultra-rich recluse, a servant, a crook: Park Chanwook’s stunning erotic thriller is set in 1930s Korea. It is the 1930s, and Korea is under the Japanese yoke. A wealthy Japanese heiress, Hideko, hires young Sookee as a servant. Hideko is a recluse in an enormous mansion, subject to the whims of her tyrannical uncle. Far from contenting herself with her servant duties, Sookee and her ne’er-do-well boyfriend have some unsavoury plans for Hideko. In this period drama, Park Chan-wook draws inspiration from Rashomon, telling his erotic, suspenseful story from multiple points of view.
