Engaging with the world
ITALY | 87 minutes | 2015
Pulcinella is sent from the bowels of Vesuvius to help a water buffalo calf. A fable about modern-day Italy, lost and beautiful. Tommaso, a humble shepherd, is the caretaker of an abandoned Neapolitan palace repeatedly pillaged and reduced to a ruin by the local mafia. Then, suddenly, he dies. Pulcinella is sent from the bowels of Mount Vesuvius to honour the shepherd’s last wishes: to save a water buffalo calf. Together, the mythic commedia dell’arte character and the young beast journey across the sublime landscapes of Italy, lost and beautiful. Hovering between myth and reality, this meandering work of cine-poetry is also a contemporary ecological fable.
