Experimentation. Transcendence. Rapture.
AUSTRIA | 130 minutes | 2015
Peter Schreiner’s abstract, internal narrative based on experience. On the island of Lampedusa, fate brings Zakaria and Giulia together. He’s an ex-fighter in the Somalian civil war; she’s an Italian tourist on the lam. Borrowing from both documentary and fiction, Schreiner shuns explanation in favour of questioning and seeking. In contemplating political themes as well as the cinematic form itself, the filmmaker creates a time space where the meeting between the two characters merges with the images’ abstract beauty.
