The great names in cinema
FRANCE, Iceland | 83 minutes | 2016
Lies come to the aid of love in this posthumous work that deftly mixes comedy and political satire. After appearing in Queen of Montreuil (2013, Anspach’s previous film), crane operator Samir falls for Agathe, a swimming instructor, in this outing. To get closer to his beloved, he pretends to be a beginner—despite being an expert swimmer. Anspach twiddles romcom conventions to deliver a final work where her skills as a satirist shine through political humour and where the swimming pool, an insular world of its own, reveals the Icelandic-American filmmaker’s much-loved city of Montreuil.
