Gutsy cinema that breaks new ground
EGYPT, Germany, United Kingdom | 118 minutes | 2016
A filmmaker criss-crosses Cairo, trying to make a documentary. But how can such a profoundly wounded city possibly be documented? It starts in 2009. Khalid, a 35-year-old filmmaker, walks the streets of Cairo. He’s looking for a place to live. His love, Laila, will soon leave Egypt. His mother is in the hospital, the city smoulders and he wants to make a documentary. Three of his colleagues discuss their cities with him: Beirut, Baghdad and Berlin. In the Last Days of the City is a reflexive docu-fiction, and a bittersweet, deeply touching ode to Cairo.
