Forget Austria of the bucolic pastures and snowy Alps. Ulrich Seidl films his fellow countrymen in unsparing close-up, turning his viewers into voyeurs. Through Seidl’s prying eyes, the Austrians seem an odd bunch indeed, prey to obscure obsessions. Examining the most shameful recesses of the psyche of a world in decline, the director reveals the emotional void of his subjects, men and women whose behaviour often slips into deviancy. Continually blurring the boundaries between reality and fiction, his films present an unflinching portrait of our fellow humans as they expose their most disreputable selves.
