The great names in cinema
BRAZIL, France | 142 minutes | 2016
A retired widow is the last remaining tenant of the Aquarius, an apartment building on a prime beachside lot in Recife. Built in the ’40s, the Aquarius has caught the eye of a condo developer who’s bought up all of its units save for one. Clara, a 60-something widow and retired music critic, refuses to leave what for her is the last vestige of a bygone era. Unwilling to abandon her memories, she engages in a cold war of sorts with the real estate firm. A study in day-to-day cruelty, Aquarius is about corruption and revolt, but also memory and its transmission, with art direction that nods to ’70s American cinema.
