ROMANIA, France, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia | 173 minutes | 2016

An explosive family reunion, complete with compromising confessions and typically Romanian deadpan. The new film by Cristi Puiu (La mort de Dante Lazarescu), a key member of the new wave of Romanian filmmakers that emerged in the mid- 2000s, is a tense, claustrophobic affair about the settling of scores. Neuroses and paranoia are front and centre as a family reunites upon its patriarch’s death. Sparking nervous laughter, its bitterly comedic scenes recall the biting Un air de famille (1996) by Cédric Klapisch. A family waltz of tensions and passions.
