ISRAEL | 98 minutes | 2016

Air guitar, pot smoking and a dental checkup as catharsis for the death of an only child. For his first feature, the young Israeli director shows considerable panache, pulling off the tricky feat of tackling a seriously gloomy subject – the death of a son – with a hefty dose of black humour while sidestepping farce. Never cumbersome or frivolous, One Week and a Day is a bittersweet comedy that flouts convention as it thumbs its nose at the exasperatingly inconvenient Grim Reaper.
